David L. "Sugar Bear" Lyons

David L. “Sugar Bear” Lyons passed away on July 7, 2021 at the age of 77.   “Sugar Bear” as he was affectionately known, was born in Indianapolis, IN on May 16, 1944 to parents, DeFord and Enda Lucille Lyons.  After a few years of college, David left to go to work for Detroit Diesel – Allison, where he worked for 29 years until his early retirement.  Following his work at Allison’s, David owned a silk-screening t-shirt business, “Sugar Bear Shirts”.  He then went on to work for Indianapolis Bear Force Concert Security and enjoyed working at the IRP as a NHRA Tech Inspector.

David had a passion for cars, drag racing and music.  He was a former member of the Indianapolis Hywinders Car Club, current member of the Cluster Busters Car Club and the NHRA.

David is survived by his wife, Mendy (Short) Lyons; daughters, Tammy Lyons-Richardson and Tina Lyons; and grandsons, Nicholas Bailey and Lucas Huter.

A memorial service will be held privately at a later date.
