David James "DJ" Preece, a lifelong resident of Zionsville, Indiana, died unexpectedly on September 12, 2015, after a brief 24 hour illness. He was 12 years old.
DJ is survived by his parents, Denise and Douglas Preece; his sister, Arden Preece; his grandparents, Richard and Ruth Preece; his grandmother, Jocelyn Tompkin; his great-grandmother, Nola Crouse; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, David Tompkin.
DJ was born on April 11, 2003 to Denise and Douglas Preece in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was in the 7th grade at Zionsville Middle School, and played trumpet in the band. He was a member of the Junior Staff in the R.O.C.K. program at Zionsville United Methodist Church, and a member of Troop 804, North Star District, Boy Scouts of America, at the Zionsville American Legion Post 79. He also participated in ATA Taekwondo at ATA Family Martial Arts.
He was a voracious reader of books and an avid video game player. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends traveling, learning, and enjoying life. DJ visited more than 15 countries, including Russia, and more than 20 states, most recently Alaska. Along the way, there wasn't a gift shop that did not catch his eye or a smile he could not bring to a stranger's face. He was often the recipient of a piggy-back ride from his sister, Arden, who never tired of transporting her younger brother.
DJ was special. He was charming. He was kind. He was disarming – even to adults – who he often surprised with his quick wit and manners beyond his age. He was a joy to be with. He was all of the good things people are supposed to be. We, his family and friends, have been blessed for his spirit to be a part of our lives and for it to live on within us.
DJ, in life and in spirit has become a part of us all, and we are better for being able to say, "I am DJ."

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in DJ's name to Troop 804, Boy Scouts of America, or the R.O.C.K. Program at ZUMC.
