David Gordon Moore, Jr.
Born July 7, 1927 in Butler County, near Morgantown, Kentucky, to David and Jewell (Belcher) Moore, Sr. Being raised on a farm during the Great Depression taught him a strong work ethic, his parents setting a good example. In church, he learned about his need to know God and the Bible and soon became an avid reader of it.
In 1945, he graduated from Morgantown High School and shortly after enlisted in the Army, where he served in France as a flight radio operator. Following his Army discharge, he attended Butler University, studying to be a Pharmacist.
On May 31, 1949, he married Mary Lavona Phillips in New Albany, Indiana. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Geo Hurt in his home with Mrs. Hurt as witness. They moved to Indianapolis, where they had a daughter, Pamela Lynn and a son, David Brian. Later moving to Carmel, where they became active members of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, where he taught an adult Sunday school class for several years.
In March of 1970, David began taking his family to Faith Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served His Lord in many capacities including Elder, Clerk of the Session and Deacon. He was a faithful cook for the high school youth group as well as welcoming the youth group to his cabin at Sweetwater Lake for annual retreats. He also would arise at 4:30 am every Friday morning to cook for Young Life. In addition, he sang faithfully in the choir as well as a male quartet.
David’s employment involved ten years with J.C. Penny and Company; Richard Bennett Furniture Company for ten years; and then with Berne Furniture Company, serving as Sales Representative for thirty years. David was known for his integrity, honesty and hard work and received many sales awards throughout his career.
After the decease of his first wife of 52 years, Lavona, he met and married Gloria Namy Boyd, a widow, on November 22, 2003. The service was performed by Rev. Glenn Bell in her Carmel home with several family and friends in attendance. In 2008, they build a 3-bedroom ranch in Westfield. The two faithfully attended Faith Church at 91st and College in Indianapolis. Gloria passed away on Aug 9th 2021 just 9 days prior to David’s passing.
David served as a volunteer for Carmel St. Vincent Hospital for several years. He was a member of Carmel Kiwanis and the Carmel Racquet Club. David’s hobbies included reading, scrabble, crossword puzzles, and TV sports. David’s favorite Bible verse was John 3:16.
David is survived by children Pamela (Daryl) Garber, David Brian (Donna) Moore, stepchildren Karl (Leanne) Namy, Marleah Dersham (Mike), Keith Namy (Kathy), Karen Namy, and Beth Riggs (Brian).
David was blessed with 3 grandchildren: Kyle and Sarah Garber and Jennifer Vroegop; 2 great-grandchildren, Ryan and Delaney Vroegop.
David was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lavona; his second wife, Gloria; granddaughter, Lindsay K. Moore and sister, Ellen Williams.
