Obituary for David E. McCollum

David Earl McCollum passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife, Harlene Roudebush McCollum; three children, Mark McCollum (married to Melissa Chouinard McCollum), Mitzi McCollum Ackerman (married to Jerry Ackerman), and Marsha McCollum Hofstetter (married to Hans Hofstetter); nine grandchildren, Julianne Ackerman Carmack (married to Logan Carmack), Ben Ackerman, Ashlyn Ackerman, Abigail Ackerman, Olivia Ackerman, Caitlin McCollum, Brett McCollum, Audrey Hofstetter, and Cassidy Hofstetter; as well as his four brothers, Mick McCollum, Jim McCollum, Steve McCollum, and Jeff McCollum. Dave was born on July 23, 1944 to Marvin L. McCollum and Frances D. Welch McCollum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was active in sports and lettered in baseball, basketball, cross country, and track at Lynn High School where he graduated in 1962. After graduation, he attended Purdue University where he earned a teaching degree in biology and physical education. While at Purdue he was the manager of the basketball team and met his wife Harlene. They were married on August 13, 1966 in Lafayette, IN. He started his career as a high school science teacher and basketball coach for Randolph Southern High School in Lynn, Indiana. Later he moved to Lafayette on 9th street where he and his wife had three children born in 1971, 1973, and 1975. During this time, he started a long career as a life insurance agent for Fidelity Union Life and worked for many years with his business partner, Bobby Plump. He moved with his family from Lafayette to Terre Haute and eventually settled in Indianapolis, IN where he resided for 45 years. He was a long-time member of East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis and later Onward Church in Fishers. He loved his Purdue Boilermakers, watching sports, playing golf, playing cards (euchre and gin), and especially spending time with his 9 grandchildren who reside in McCordsville, IN, Gilbert, AZ, and Cypress, TX. Funeral services will be held at Onward Church 13095 Publishers Dr., Fishers, IN 46038 on Saturday, May 13, 2023. There will be a 10:00am visitation and 11:00am memorial service.
