Daniel Terry Casey

Daniel Terry “Dan” Casey, 81, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away quietly and peacefully on September 14, 2026 after a long battle with dementia. He was born on April 8, 1945, in Nantucket, Massachusetts, to the late Arthur C. Casey Jr. and Alice Mae Casey.

Dan grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and spent the summers of his youth on Nantucket with his mother’s family, the start of a lifelong connection to the island. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1963. Always a proud Volunteer, he attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and served six years in the Tennessee Air National Guard

Dan built a distinguished career that began in sales, where it was joked he could sell ice in the Arctic. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 2008 as Vice President.

Dan was an athlete most of his life. He played football in high school and college, transitioning to softball, tennis and golf. A scratch golfer, he participated in and won many club tournaments.

Dan was also a talented artist and an accomplished craftsman. Over the years he gifted family and friends his pen-and-ink drawings, hand-carved quarterboards — a Nantucket tradition and a tribute to the island he loved — and handmade wooden gifts. Those pieces remain treasured keepsakes in the homes of family and friends.

Dan was a funny, inquisitive man and an avid reader of history and mysteries. He took great interest in trying new crafts and was an early adopter of new technology, always among the first to own the newest gadget. A lifelong Catholic, he said a daily rosary.

Dan and Ellyn were the proud parents of two daughters, Terry L. Casey Cato and the late Jennifer E. Alderman. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ellyn; his daughter Terry and her husband, Edward “Eddie” Cato, and their children, Daniel “Dan” Casey Cato and his husband, John Lopez, and Evan; his son-in-law, Dr. Robert “Rob” Alderman, and Robert and Jennifer’s children, Casey, Connor, and Riley Alderman; and his sister, Nancy Hoffman, of Atlanta, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Alice, his brother, Brian and his beloved daughter, Jennifer, who passed away in 2021 after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Dan always said his family was his greatest accomplishment… he also always credited his wife Ellyn for how well they “turned out”. He loved both of his son-in-laws and said he could not have done better if he had hand picked them. The phrase “Ask me about my children and grandchildren” was truly his mantra.

A Memorial Gathering will take place on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m., at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 10655 Haverstick Road, Carmel, Indiana 46033. Internment will be at Carmel Cemetery, with a luncheon and celebration of life to follow back at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church.
