Dan Ellsworth Flickinger was born in September, 1919 in Indianapolis, Indiana and passed away in March, 2013. He was the son of Dan W. and Emma Flickinger. He graduated from Shortridge High School, where he was President of the National Honor Society, a member of the tennis team, and an Eagle Scout.
In 1941, he received an A.B. degree from Harvard College, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his numerals in freshman basketball; was Business Manager of his class' college yearbook; and was elected to the Permanent Class Committee. He entered military service after graduation, spent four years in service, three of which were overseas. On May 20, 1944, in Algiers, he married a fellow Officer, Marianne Cabell. He is survived by his sister Emily Kennedy, and was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Fred, his sister Marjorie, his wife Marianne, and granddaughter Melissa Anne. He is survived by son Dan C. (Belinda) Flickinger, daughters Beth (Chris) Padon and Katie Hein, granddaughters Susan Flickinger (Seung-Chul) Hong and Amy K. Hein, grandson Daniel G. L. (Mary) Flickinger and great grandson Ian Flickinger Hong.
Upon discharge from service, he joined the Personnel Department of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston. In 1949, he transferred to the Indianapolis Agency, headed by his father. In 1959, when his father retired, Dan and his brother, Fred, were appointed Co-General Agents. In 1967, he returned to personal production, qualified for five President's Honor Clubs and twice for the Million Dollar Round Table. He qualified 25 times for the National Quality Award-90% persistency. He was a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals and served a term as President of the local chapter. He also was a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA). He earned credentials as a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and a Masters Degree in Financial Services (MSFS). In 1985, he "semi-retired" and moved to his wife's home town, Clayton, New York. He served on the vestry of Christ Episcopal Church as Finance Chairman, sang in the choir, served on the board of the Clayton Improvement Association, and monitored insurance courses for the Northern New York Life Underwriter Association.
In 1995, he and his wife returned to Indianapolis moving into Robin Run Retirement Community in 1999, where they were members of the Library Committee and the Village Choir.
Dan's lifelong interest was music. He played both clarinet and saxophone and received a music scholarship for three summers in the Culver Summer School Band. He served as concert master of the Shortridge High School Band and played in the Harvard Band.
In 1963, he helped organize the "Northwinds" Big Band, which assisted charitable organizations in fund raising. In 1985, he joined the "Arrhythmias" Big Band based in Watertown, New York. Upon moving into Robin Run, he helped organize and lead a "Big Band" and a "Little Band," which played mainly for Robin Run activities.
