Dr. D. Duane Houser
Dr. Houser, 72, of Greenfield, Indiana went to be with his Lord on May 10, 2011. A dedicated physician truly called with a gift of healing, Dr. Houser was known for the compassion and quality of care he gave over 40 years of private & clinical practice and teaching. He was born May 3, 1939, to Adam and LaVohn Houser in Rockford, Ohio, and married Ruth Ann (Rock) Houser in 1962 in Millington, Michigan. Following the loss of his loving and devoted first wife to cancer, Dr. Houser would have told you he was fortunate enough to have found the second love of his life in April (Walker-Neal) Houser, whom he married in 2006, and who survives him.
Dr. Houser received his undergraduate degree from Taylor University, where he also met his spouse. After graduating from Indiana University School of Medicine, he completed his internship and medicine residency at Methodist Hospital. He then finished an Allergy/Asthma/Immunology Fellowship at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict, practicing Allergy and Immunology at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington DC.
Dr. Houser was board certified and a Diplomat of The American Board of Allergy and Immunology. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (FAAAAI), a member of the College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), and a fellow of the College of Chest Physicians (FCCP).
Dr. Houser received the Teacher of the Year Award from Methodist Hospital. He was past present of the Allergy & Immunology Service at St. Vincent Hospital and the Indiana State Allergy Asthma and Immunology Society. He developed a large referral practice dedicated to the diagnosis and management of occupational and non-occupational asthma and related respiratory diseases. He was then recruited to Indiana University School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of the Asthma and Allergy Center, which he helped establish. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and was an avid Colts and Notre Dame fan, and followed college football with a passion.
Dr. Houser is preceded in death by his parents Adam & LaVohn Houser, brother Max Houser, and his first wife, Ruth Ann (Rock) Houser. He is survived by his wife April (Neal-Walker) Houser, children Dan Houser Jr. (wife Rebecca), Diane (Houser) Gaskins (husband Charles), Alan Houser (wife Melissa), and 7 grandchildren Emily, Kayla, Robert & Rachael Houser, and Charles, Lewis, & Edmund Gaskins. A small viewing for friends and family will be held at 1 pm May 12 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center in Carmel, IN, followed by a funeral, then short graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Central Indiana Crisis Pregnancy Center are requested.
