Cynthia (“Cindy”) Capp Pittenger, 68, of Fishers, Indiana died in hospice care at Community Heart & Vascular Hospital on September 7, 2022. She was born October 24, 1953 at Ft. Bragg, NC to Gen. Clifton C. Capp and the late Dorothy S. Capp. Thereafter, her family moved to Northbrook, IL, where she lived until her post-college marriage to Gordon L. (“Gary”) Pittenger in 1974. She met Gary while both attended DePauw University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. After their marriage, Gary and Cindy moved to Indianapolis where he attended law school and she worked as a dental assistant, office assistant and nursery school teacher. After law school, they raised their three children in Lawrence Township, then moved to Fishers, IN after the children completed college. She held other jobs, but Cindy’s true calling was as mother, “grammie,” wife and friend. Her kindness and empathy, her beautiful smile and her striking eyes invited others of all ages to engage with her. And her gentle grace lifted them even when she wasn’t feeling well at all. Over many years, she pursued her strong faith through various groups and activities at Epworth United Methodist Church as well as through service elsewhere. As her health permitted, she was a Riley Hospital dialysis unit volunteer, and served as a soup kitchen worker, hospice volunteer and Court Appointed Special Advocate for children.
Cindy is survived by her father, Gen. Clifton C. Capp; husband Gary; daughters Brooke (Chris) Magdzinski and Kristen (Kirk) Brenner; son Scott (Meghan) Pittenger; and sister Deborah (Bill) Spartz. And by grandchildren Andrew, Kaitlin, and Bennett Adamson; Taylor, Maxwell, Brady, James, and Lottie Magdzinski; Gwyneth and Cynthia Pittenger; and numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.
The family thanks Community Heart & Vascular Hospital’s superb ICU nursing and hospice teams, as well as cardiologist Dr. Rey Vivo and pulmonologist Dr. Franklin Roesner for their compassionate expertise during Cindy’s hospitalization. And we are especially grateful to Dr. Hillary Wu of the Central Indiana Cancer Center, who guided Cindy’s treatment for many years.
