Cornelis W. Th. Vanlonden (91) of 9940 Hoosier Village Dr. Indianapolis Indiana passed away July 5th, 2016 at 8:22 am in Indianapolis, IN.
Cor was born in Tjimahi, Indonesia on October 16, 1924 to Cornelis Pieter Van Londen and Wilhelmina (van Casand) Van Londen. While there and in The Netherlands, he completed his education with the European equivalent of a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and a Master’s Degree in Economics. During his time in Indonesia he worked as a musician playing gigs here and there. He lived there for 33 years before he and his extended family repatriated to The Netherlands in 1957. He remained in The Netherlands until he and his wife Alida Vanlonden (Wijdoogen) immigrated to the United States in 1960. In 1965 he became a citizen of the U.S. and was proud of that moment for the rest of his life. In 1960 he began to work at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana where he retired from in 1982 as VP of Finance. While at Blue Cross he traveled the United States extensively as the Indianapolis Chapter President of The Institute of Internal Auditors. Cor returned to school and earned a diploma as a Marine Mechanic with certifications from several factories and worked on boats for 10 years. Cor then returned to his accounting and financial roots by working at the Salvation Army Harbor Light in Indianapolis as Director of Finance. He retired for good in 2004. . He was a member of Valley Mills Friends Meeting since 1960 and served as treasurer of Western Yearly Meeting for 7 years.
Cor was an accomplished guitar player and enjoyed music by playing in gigs or impromptu jam sessions. Jazz always got him going. He also enjoyed fishing, making his own rods, the outdoors, photography, telling stories, family gatherings and a good intellectual debate from time to time. He contributed to his local community through his years as a member of the Lion’s Club, volunteer work with the United Way, Sunday school teacher, and his continued financial support to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Cor is loved many family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Cornelis Pieter and Wilhelmina Maria Th. van Londen, and Alida Wijdoogen Vanlonden. He is survived by daughter, April D. Vanlonden (Centerville, IN) and son Reginald G. , daughter-in-law Lynette , and grandchildren Emily and Ethan Vanlonden (Sartell, MN) and Michael Wijdoogen (Megan) , nephew (Sterling, Virginia). In addition, are numerous nieces and nephews across the United States and in the Netherlands.
