Cordelia Fairrow was born on February 14, 1921 in Clarksville, TN to Nancy and Ira Fairrow. She had six siblings: Mary Henry Kates, Edna Marie Gupton, Grace June Mabry, and three brothers Robert Cleophus Fairrow, Theodore Roosevelt Fairrow, and Herbert Ira Fairrow, who all preceded her in death. Cordelia accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Clarksville, TN. She remained a devoted Christian throughout her life and actively participated in the church as a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and church usher. She remained a member of Crooked Creek Baptist Church until her death.
Cordelia married Clinton Poindexter on June 23, 1941 and to this union four girls were born: Marian Bernice Poston, Carolyn Marie Amos (Donald), Billie Darlene Moore (Andrew), and Betty LaVonne Gilliam. Cordelia was a devoted mother to her four daughters and instilled in them Christian principles, the importance of education, and the value of hard work. Cordelia always set high standards and goals for her daughters and enjoyed actively participating in their school lives, and social activities in whatever way she could. She served as the president of the PTA, Campfire Girls leader, Band Parent Booster Club and ensured that her daughters were prepared for every activity they were involved in. Favorite summer activities included fun-filled vacations and trips to the grandparents in Tennessee.
Cordelia was very active in the community working as a tutor for Indianapolis Public Schools and serving as a community organizer and on voter registration. Cordelia was an excellent seamstress and designed and sewed clothes for her young daughters as well as many ladies upon request. She enjoyed many other hobbies including painting, knitting, crocheting, pottery, and always felt it her duty to teach others. After retiring she and her husband joined a camping club and traveled throughout the United States. They enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida where they continued to enjoy an active lifestyle involving outdoor activities.
Cordelia departed this life on January 20, 2015. She enjoyed 69 years of matrimony with her husband Clinton who preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters, ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, four great, great grandchildren, and a host of family and friends. Cordelia was a dynamic person with an active zest for life. She made a positive impact on all of the lives that she touched.
