Cloyd "Curly" Julian, 101 died April 10, 2012. Cloyd was born on November 30, 1910, the oldest of seven sons born to Elsie and Otto Julian of Austin, Indiana. He graduated from Austin High School and from DePauw University. While attending DePauw on a Rector Scholarship, he ran cross country where he almost made the Olympic team. He later received his Masters from the University of Iowa.
He married Elizabeth "Betty" Brooks on December 25, 1935, and was married for 62 years. Curly was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and brothers; Delbert, Thurman Altus, Harold, and Ray Dean Julian. He is survived by his son Bill (Kathy), daughter Joanne Solomon (Gerald), granddaughter Erin Morrow (Louis), three great grandsons; Brooks, Will, and Miles. He is also survived by two brothers, Wilbur and Gordon, of Scott County.
Curly taught at Austin High School for 2 years before coming to Indianapolis to be the track coach and health teacher at George Washington High School. There he stayed for the next 40 years becoming department head, PE consultant, vice-principal and his last 17 years as Principal. While Principal, Washington won 2 state championships in basketball, 2 state championship in football and one in girl's track. He supported the beginning of a humanities curriculum. He loved the Westside especially the students and parents of Washington. He became known as "Mr. Continental". The GWCHS auditorium is named after him. During the War, he served as an Administrative Officer in the Navy Air Corps and attained the rank of Lt. Commander. He refereed high school football and basketball around the state. He is a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.
Curly Julian, with Jim Otto and Dr. Ed Tether, wrote one of the leading health books, "Modern Health". He also co-authored the first sex education book for high schools.
After retirement, Curly continued to be very active in many different groups. He was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church, Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine, ATO Collegiate Fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa, Hugenot Society the Rotary Club of Indianapolis, and the Indianapolis Contemporary Club. ]
The viewing will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple on Friday, April 13, 2012 with a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 2:00 pm held at Broadway United Methodist Church on Fall Creek Blvd. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Broadway UMC Foundation, Indiana Football Foundation, or Marquette Manor Foundation.
