Clarence Elvin Wood
Died March 25, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on May 19, 1913, to the late Cyrus E. and Mary L. (Swegman) Wood.
He graduated from Carmel High School in 1930 and received his law degree (LLB) from Indiana Law School in 1935.
On March 28, 1937, he married Sarah Martha Tyler of Indianapolis, in the Union Chapel Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on January 3, 2009.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan (Jerry) Albert, and two sons, Chester (Dolores) Wood, and Steven (Anne) Wood, 19 grand-children, 22 great-grand-children, and 1 great-great-grand-child also survive. (Includes spouses)
He was preceded in death by his "baby sister", Roberta (Wood) Moore and her husband, Richard Moore, Roxie (Wood) Summers and her husband Robert H. Summers, Sarah's brother, Gordon G. Tyler and his wife Marian.
He was a long-time member of East 49th Street Christian Church which later became East 91st Street Christian Church, he had served as a trustee, several terms as an elder, two terms as elder Chairman, and also served on the six member transition team following the retirement of his pastor, Russ Blowers. He was also the teacher of an adult Bible Fellowship Class for 50 years, retiring to take care of his invalid wife. Together, he and his wife had served as sponsors for the church's Chi Rho youth group.
In 1986, he was one of the founding directors of the Light Of The World Ministries, Inc., mission board and served two terms as its first board chairman. This is the organization that sponsored the missionary activities in Nairobi, Kenya, of his son, Dr. Chester E. Wood, and Chester's wife, Dolores.
In 1930 he was employed by the E. C. Atkins and Company saw manufacturers in their wood working division. In the middle 1940's, he also served as a trainer for the War Manpower Commission in its Training within Industry Division, conducting training in the local industries that had war contracts. In his later years with the Atkins Company, he served as its Personnel Director.
In 1959, he joined the Weekday Religious Education Program in Indianapolis (Released Time Education) where he helped to raise funds for the program.
In 1963 he joined the New York Life Insurance Company as a life insurance salesman, retiring in 1999.
Memberships included the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Foremen's Club, the Training Association of Indianapolis, the Indiana Personnel Association, the Life Underwriter's Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, Centre Masonic Lodge #23, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis.
The funeral service will be at Flanner and Buchanan- Broad Ripple on 1:00 pm Thursday, March 29, 2012 with Pastor John Samples officiating. Burial will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home, 1035 Broad Ripple Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46220, from 11:00 to 1:00 on Thursday.
