Christopher O’Neal Harney, age 64, of Indianapolis, passed away August 1, 2021, at St. Francis Hospice House, ending his battle with cancer.
Chris was born April 16, 1957, in Beech Grove, Indiana, and graduated from Mt. Comfort High School. He spent the last 25 years of his life with his devoted wife, Rita.
Chris enjoyed music, bicycling, eating at his favorite restaurant, Gramboli’s Pizza, all things chocolate, and “just chillin.” He took pride in maintaining his lawn, vehicles, and the vehicles of his loved ones. Chris was a great man who touched many lives. He knew how to have a good time, and was always helping and teaching others. He had a way of making people feel understood, valued, and special just for being them. He would often end interactions by flashing the peace sign and saying “thanks for being you, kid.” He will be deeply missed, but will be carried on through the actions and memories of those whose lives he’s touched.
Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Betty Harney (Dilley); and brother, Curt Harney.
He is survived by his spouse, Rita Corey; daughter, Lacee Harney; son, Shawn Harney (son Blake Harney), step-daughters, Kerry Byrne (spouse Tim Byrne, daughter Ava Byrne) and Tara Walker (daughters Renee, Abby, and Maddy Wheatley); sister, Carrie Harney; great aunt, Marilyn Jo Harney; and 5 grandchildren.
The visitation will be held at Franklin Road Baptist Church (51 N Franklin Rd., Indianapolis) on Thursday, August 5, 2021, at 10:30 am. The funeral will begin at 12:30 pm, followed by a procession and burial at Washington Park East Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the family for medical and funeral expenses.
