Charles Wilson Mccarter

Charles W. McCarter died peacefully at home in Zionsville, IN on March 21, 2016, at the age of 90.

Charles is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Barbara andCharles; his grandchildren Christina, Jennifer, Megan, James, and Emily; andhis great-grandchildren Brittnee, Kaylee, Lilly, Sarah, Jack and Anna. He ispreceded in death by his children Mark and Michiel.

Charles was born on March 7, 1926, in Macy, Indiana to Alvahand Doris. He graduated from Macy High School in 1944, the FBI national Academyin 1966, was certified as a SCUBA instructor for the Indiana State Police, andgraduated from IVY Tech as a licensed Real Estate Broker. He met the love ofhis life, Ruth Hammond, while stationed in San Francisco during WWII. Theymarried on December 1, 1945. Over 70 years, the couple welcomed three children,five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren into their family.

Charles served as a radioman with the Navy in WWII from May,1944 until June 1946. After returning home, Charles worked as a brakeman on theNickel Plate railroad. He then joined the Indiana State Police where he servedfor 31 years and was promoted to Records and Data Division Commander, retiringwith the rank of Major. After a brief retirement, Charles went back to work forthe State of Indiana with the State Board of Health and the Department ofCorrections. After a second brief retirement Charles worked at his hometownTrue Value hardware store until he turned 85.

Charles was an avid fisherman and was happiest sitting in afishing boat catching northern pike at Little Moose Lake in northern Minnesota.When he wasn’t fishing he was growing fresh vegetables and generously sharedthem with his friends and neighbors. Charles enjoyed working with his hands andalways kept busy with repair or remodeling projects. He was an expert carpenter, a skilledmechanic, a plumber, and electrician.

The viewing is scheduled from 4:00 until 7:00pm on Thursday,March 24th, and from 9:30 until 10:00am on Friday, March 25th with thefuneral to immediately follow at 10:00 am on Friday at Flanner and Buchananfuneral center in Zionsville, IN. ReverendLarry Whinnery will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend andcelebrate Charles’ life.

The McCarter family would like to thank the outstanding careprovided by St. Vincent Hospice service.
