Charles (Chuck) H. Williams M.D. passed away on June 19, 2026; survived by his beloved wife, Karen (née Haub) Williams, to whom he was married for 66 years. Chuck was a loving father to Charles (Chip) Williams married to Anne; Debbie Cousins, married to Bob; and Brad Williams married to Christine. He is also survived by his eight wonderful grandchildren: Chase, Aidan, Luca, Reece, Lindsey, Nora, Francesca and Leo.
Chuck was born in Pierre, SD. When he was a boy, his family moved to Illinois, where he attended York High School. At York, he was a track athlete and played the tuba in the high school band. He earned his B.S. degree from Elmhurst College, where he met Karen, his love and wife for over 65 years. He then attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine (Chicago) and earned his MD degree in 1961.
After two years of surgical residency at Presbyterian-St. Lukes Hospital in Chicago, he and Karen moved to Arkansas, where he served in the U.S. Air Force medical corps for two years. After the completion of his residency in diagnostic radiology at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis in 1968, he joined the Clinical Radiologists S.C. group at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL where he was actively engaged in clinical practice, pioneered MRI imaging in Springfield and helped grow the practice in the central Illinois region. Within the Clinical Radiologists group, he served as the chairman of the Department of Radiology for eleven years. He also served as a clinical professor of radiology at the Southern Illinois University of Medicine (Springfield).
Outside of his medical practice, Chuck enjoyed cooking, gardening and was an accomplished woodworker, creating many heirloom furniture pieces for his family. He also loved capturing video at family gatherings and editing charming videos of his grandchildren’s’ exploits, providing many cherished and humorous memories for his family. Chuck and his wife Karen were members of the Congregational Church in Springfield for 40 years.
In his retirement, Chuck continued with his woodworking, photography and videos. Always curious, his interest in the local history of Springfield led him to volunteer as a tour guide and docent at the Dana Thomas House and the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield, IL.
His last years were spent in Carmel, Indiana, close to family. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.
