Charles W. Gates

Charles W. Gates, 91, Indianapolis passed away April 5th at home. Charles, son of Clarence and Mary Ethel (Norris) Gates, grew up on the south side of Indianapolis. He attended St. Catherine and St. Ann Schools and graduated from Decatur Central High School in 1939. Charles served in the U. S. Coast Guard during WWII from 1942 to 1946. He was employed at Allison's in Maywood for 35 years, retiring in 1976. Retirement years were active with gardening, woodworking, travel and various real estate projects with his wife, Catherine. Charles was preceded in death by his brother Harold Gates and sister, Mary Catherine (Clark); and grandchild Derek Gates. Charles is survived by his wife, Catherine, the love of his life for the past 64 years. He is survived by three children, Larry (Diane), Linda (Tom), and Rita (Robert), 9 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Visitation is 4:00 to 8:00pm on Monday, April 9th at Flanner and Buchanan-Decatur , 5463 Kentucky Avenue, Indianapolis. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday in St Ann Catholic Church, 6350 Mooresville Rd., Indianapolis. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, with military honors.
