Charles Richard Spaulding

February 14, 1947 — January 13, 2022

Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis – Charles Richard “Rick” Spaulding, 74, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Thursday, January 13.  Rick was born on February 14, 1947, in Louisville, KY, to Charles and Eula Spaulding.

Rick was a graduate of Atherton High School and United Electronics Institute both in Louisville, KY. Following graduation, he moved to Indianapolis to begin a career with Indiana Bell Telephone Company.  In response to the draft, Rick served two years in the Army.  Following his service, he returned to the phone company for the remainder of his career.  Retirement offered the opportunity to help others through numerous volunteer activities.

Active in church throughout his life, Rick was currently attending Meridian Street United Methodist where he was involved in music and sound ministries.

Known for his unusual sense of humor and unending puns, Rick loved to laugh and bring laughter to others.  He was a lifelong train enthusiast with a focused interest in the L&N railroad.  He will be remembered as a loving and generous friend, husband, father, and gramps.

Rick is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gretchen Spaulding; daughters, Janet Spaulding of Indianapolis and Ann (Kevin) Vick of Fort Wayne, IN; and grandsons, James and Andrew Vick.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Malinda Spaulding.

Because of COVID considerations, a private graveside service will be held at Washington Park North Cemetery for family.  A service celebrating Rick’s life will be held for family and friends at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 19, at Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
