Charles N Chambers

January 22, 1936 — November 29, 2018

Martinsville, Indiana

Charles N. Chambers, 82, of Martinsville, Indiana passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones on November 29, 2018. He was born January 22, 1936 in New Castle, Indiana to Reginald and Lillian Chambers; he was one of three children.

A lifetime Indiana resident, Charles made the brave decision to join the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18. He dutifully served his country as a sharpshooter during the Korean Conflict, and beyond. He received an honorable discharge with the USMC but later reenlisted into the military. He joined the United States Army, further proving his selflessness as he continued to serve his country. As a nation, we are forever grateful for brave men like Charles who fought, and continue to fight, for country when we are in need. He met the love of his life, Karen, through a family member. The two spent 53 beautiful years together, raising three children. They remained deeply in love at the time of Karen’s passing in 2008. Fate would have it that Charles would be blessed enough to find love a second time in fellow church member and widow, Elizabeth “Tootie”. The two went out for breakfast at a local restaurant and the rest is history. They were married just two months later on December 7, 2014 and shared a beautiful 10 years together as they merged their lives and families. To say that Charles was a jack of all trades would be an understatement. He was an intelligent man that succeeded in all he tried. He was a systems analyst by trade, but he was also a computer programmer, photographer, mechanic, licensed realtor, and founding member of the volunteer fire department in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. He also served as an ordained minister at Reelsville United Methodist Church, and even possessed a private investigator’s license. He was a devoted member of Highland Creek Baptist Church in Martinsville, Indiana. He loved collecting guns and woodworking tools, though his family doesn’t remember him actually putting any of those tools to work. Though all of these things describe Charles, he is best remembered as a man of few words, who possessed a heart of gold, and loved his family deeply. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all. His passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of all of those who were blessed enough to meet him during his time on earth; peace can be found in knowing he was a man of God and they will be reunited one day.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Reginald and Lillian (Decker) Chambers; wife of 53 years, Karen Chambers (Amick); brother, Joseph Chambers. Surviving to cherish his memory are loving wife of 10 years, Elizabeth Chambers (Stewart); daughters, Deenah (John) Rohde, Charity (Mark) Anderson, Cheryl (Michael) Taylor; step-daughter, Rebecca Cooper; sister, Joyce (Jerry) Dean; 7 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and one on the way; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

Family and friends are invited to gather Tuesday, December 11, 2018 from 11-1 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Decatur Township, 5463 Kentucky Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46221. A Memorial Service for Charles will begin at 1 PM at the funeral home.

Family would like to give a special thanks to Tootie and Rebecca. These two were an integral part of Charles’s life, providing constant care, conversation, and unconditional love. They wouldn’t have been able to do it without them and will remain forever grateful for their support.
