Charles Irvin Myers, 84, passed away Sunday at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by Mary Jane (Hoffman) Myers, his wife of 60 years; by his parents, Iva (Henderson) Bayt and Irvin Myers, and by granddaughter, Cassandra.
Charles was born in Indianapolis on February 2, 1933. After graduating from Washington High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After basic training he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. After returning home to marry Jane, his childhood sweetheart, on July 9, 1954, they set up housekeeping in Dover, Delaware where he served out the remainder of his enlistment. Afterward, he used his Air Force training to secure a job with Detroit Diesel Allison’s at their jet turbine testing facility in Indianapolis where he worked until his retirement in 1992.
Charles and Jane had three children, and family always stood at the center of their life. As long as they were physically able, travel was their shared passion. Their early years of tent camping with young ones evolved into trailer camping as their children grew and finally into foreign travel as they enjoyed life together with an empty nest.
Charles was a 33rd degree Mason with memberships in the Speedway Masonic Lodge #500 and the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis, Additionally; he was a devoted Christian with membership at Westview Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and also attended church services at Robin Run Village where he lived for several years. Charles also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, drawing, fishing, playing cards, and listening to country music.
He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Harry and Beverly Myers of Miami, FL; Jesse and Marilyn Myers of Bryan, TX and Jill and Jon Cardwell of Greenwood, IN; by grandchildren, Kurt Myers, Clint Myers, Megan Myers, Jessica Brooks, Steven Myers, Tammy Cardwell, Nathan Cardwell, and Caitlynn Cardwell; by step-grandchildren, Nick Kane, Khori Kane, and Debra Mendez; and great grandchildren, Christopher, Madison, Gavin, Jaxon, Branden, Gabriel, David, Kasey, Mikala, Jaden, Jalaina, Jeneavieve, and Jacquilynn.
Calling will be held on Friday December 22, 2017 at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park North from 1 to 3 pm followed by the funeral service at 3 pm. Entombment will be in Washington Park North Cemetery. Online condolences may be shared at www.flannerbuchanan.com
