Charles Glesing

Charles Richard Glesing passed away on April 16, 2012. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, he was born on October 9, 1931, the second of two children to Frances (Matricia) and Carl Glesing. Charles attended Shortridge High School graduating in 1949. As a student he was a three-sport athlete playing Football, Basketball and Baseball. He was named Captain of the Basketball team his senior year. After high school he briefly attended the University of Miami in Florida before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He obtained the rank of Sergeant, served as a Clerk and continued to use his athletic skills playing with the USAF Basketball team in California. He married Ellen Jordan in 1951 while he was stationed with the U.S. Air Force in California. Together, they were blessed with six children, five of whom survive. Although divorced, they remained good friends, until her death in 2010. Following his military service he joined the Indianapolis Police Department (IPD) in 1960, retiring in 1989. With IPD he became a member of the first group to become K-9 officers, and along with his coal black German shepherd, Jinx he served the citizens of Indianapolis. He rose to the rank of sergeant and received several commendations throughout his career. After retiring in 1989, he continued to serve as a member of the Marion County Sheriff's Department Civil Office for another 10 years. Charles also kept busy working security with Shapiro's Delicatessen where many close friendships were made and they became a second family to him. Charles is survived by his children, Frances Marie Pasalich (Dr. John) of Fort Wayne, Suzanne Chaffee (Dr. Kenneth) of Hamilton Lake, Charles Richard Glesing, Jr. (Michelle) of Carmel, Juliana Cain (David) of Fort Worth, Texas and Sarah Jordan Jenkins (Dr. Brian) of Fort Wayne, sister, Rose Delaney of Indianapolis, 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. His son, Stephen Andrew Glesing preceded him in death in 1978. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church with calling one hour prior. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. There will be a gathering at Shapiro's Delicatessen 808 S. Meridian Street Indianapolis, to honor and celebrate Charles life immediately following the services. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Dekalb Health Home Care and Hospice 1316 East Seventh Street Auburn, Indiana 46706.
