Charles Daniel Lashley

Charles D. Lashley 70, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on April 6, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, IN. The eldest of six siblings, Charles was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. At age 17, Charles joined the United States Marine Corp. During his service, he earned a pistol marksmanship badge, a rifle marksmanship badge, 6 good conduct medals, and a Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Unit Citation. Charles performed three tours of Vietnam and was awarded a bronze star and a purple heart. After 20 years of service, Charles retired from the Marine Corp as a Gunnery Sergeant and joined General Motors in Indianapolis, IN, where he worked for 27 years until his retirement in 2002. He was preceded in death by parents, Charles F. Lashley, Melba Eileen Hamelback, and Fealie V. Hamelback, Sr; sisters, Gloria Studer and Pamela Hamelback; and son, Wayne D. Lashley. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Violet R. Lashley; brothers, Vern (Bobby) Hamelback and Brian Hamelback; sisters, Sue Nabors and Shiela (Victor) McEntire; son, Charles (Jennifer) Lashley; daughters, Patsy Welch, Rosemarie (Elmer) Agapay, and Katherine Sterrett; 11 grandchildren, Rosel Agapay Williams, Earl Agapay, Carla Agapay, Aaron Agapay, Courtney Butler, Maci K. Sterrett, Joseph C. Sterrett, Kayla Halcomb, Charles D. Lashley, Lexus Halcomb, and Dominik W. McVay; 3 great-granchildren, Michele Williams, King Samuel Williams, and Kevin Williams IV; many nieces and nephews; and numerous loving relatives and friends. Visitation for Charles will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2011, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington Street. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 11, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the funeral center. Interment will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN.
