In Loving Memory of Charlene Leora Parks

September 11, 1950 – June 26, 2026

Charlene Leora Parks was born on September 11, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Eldora and Carl Hill. She spent her childhood in Baltimore, where she attended Eastern High School, an all-girls school, graduating with the Class of 1968.

After high school, Charlene began her career with John Hancock as the Office Supervisor. It was there that she moved to Indianapolis and met Francis Parks through a coworker who would later become her father-in-law. They married and later welcomed their daughter, Rachel, and began building the family that remained Charlene’s greatest joy. She loved her work and especially treasured the relationships she formed with her coworkers, many of whom remained lifelong friends.

Charlene later dedicated 14 years of service to Indianapolis Public Schools before retiring her role as Executive Secretary to the School Board. Her retirement came at just the right time, allowing her to receive a life-changing kidney transplant and fully embrace one of the greatest blessings of her life—becoming a grandmother.

Her grandson, Keaton, quickly became the light of her life, and there was nothing she loved more than spending time with him and hearing him yell, “MA!” More than any title she held, Charlene loved being a mother and grandmother. She offered unconditional love, guidance, and encouragement; and found her greatest joy in watching them grow and thrive.

Charlene had a personality that was impossible to forget. She was quick-witted, kindhearted, and if you asked for her opinion, you could count on getting the truth. She was a genuine soul and that earned her the respect and love of everyone around her. She had a remarkable gift for making people laugh and creating a welcoming atmosphere wherever she went. Whether through a clever retort, playful teasing, or randomly dancing and singing, Charlene knew how to brighten a room and make people feel at home.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved going to the movies, listening to her favorite records, gardening, and surrounding herself with beautiful plants. She adored animals and believed a house was meant to be lived in, filled with love, and shared with others. You could also count on her for friendly competition at ping pong, scrabble, or monopoly.

Charlene also treasured the friendships that stood the test of time. She shared a lifelong bond with her dear friend Leslie, whom she met during her school years in Baltimore, and with Jackie, her beloved neighbor and friend of more than 40 years. These enduring friendships reflected the loyalty, laughter, and authenticity that defined her life.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents, Eldora Hill and Carl Hill. She leaves to forever cherish her memory her brother, Bertram Hill (Barbara and nephew, Justin) of Baltimore, Maryland; her daughter and grandson, Rachel and Keaton Edwards of Indianapolis, Indiana; her extended family; her lifelong friends; and a host of neighbors and loved ones whose lives were forever enriched by her love, generosity, and unforgettable spirit.

While her physical presence will be deeply missed, she will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
