Charlene Elaine Matthews, 85, of Clearwater, Florida, formerly of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026.
Charlene was born on June 18, 1941, to the late Thelma Frances (née Hutton) and Charles Martin Litz. She was a loving daughter, devoted wife, cherished mother and grandmother, beloved sister, and a dear friend to many.
In 1959, Charlene graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis. Two years later, in 1961, she married her high school sweetheart, John Matthews Sr. Together, they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage and built a beautiful life centered around their family. They were blessed with four children, whom Charlene loved deeply and devoted herself to raising with patience, warmth, and unconditional love.
Charlene worked for Kroger for 22 years as a cashier before retiring. She was known for her kind heart and friendly spirit, and she touched the lives of many through the simple kindness she offered each day.
In 2001, Charlene and John relocated to Clearwater, Florida, where they enjoyed many happy years together surrounded by sunshine, warm weather, and the beauty of their new home. Her faith remained an important part of her life, and she attended Bethel Lutheran Church in Clearwater. She was also a longtime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Indianapolis, where her family were founding members.
Charlene found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved crocheting, playing cards, spending time with family and friends, and being part of her church community. Most of all, she treasured the people she loved. Her family was her greatest joy, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Charlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Matthews Sr.; her son, John Matthews Jr.; and her niece, Deanne Candler.
She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and cherished memories with her children, Richard Matthews, Darlene (Alan) Williamson, and Chip Matthews; sister, Suzanne (Ken) Fisher; grandchildren, Megan (Mitch) Holland, Michael Matthews, Olivia Matthews, Chad (Halie) Collins, Cole Collins, Hannah Matthews, and Nick Matthews; niece, Dana (Brad) Bucks; nephew, Donnie (Nadine) Skiles; daughter-in-law, Christine Matthews; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
Though Charlene will be deeply missed, her love, laughter, kindness, and memories will remain forever in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her. Her life was a gift, and her legacy will live on through her family and all those whose lives she touched.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 9th from 4-8pm at Flanner Buchanan - Washington Park East 10722 E. Washington Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46229.
