Indianapolis, Indiana – Carolyn Helena Smith, 91, passed away after being comforted by her family on January 18, 2026. Her spirit, her faith, and most importantly her love will be forever missed by all who knew her.
Carolyn was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 7, 1934, to parents Paul E. and Mary M. (Ritter) Rathz. Carolyn worked for a few companies, notably National Cash Register, where she met her beloved husband Alfred T. Smith, then the Card Cage and Wicks & Sticks, where she rose to become a manager. Eventually, she left to work at Alfred’s company where she worked as a bookkeeper. She also served as a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America.
A long time Catholic, Carolyn was also heavily involved with her church, St. Vincent De Paul. Her selfless spirit made her an instrumental part of their volunteer staff.
More than anything else however, Carolyn was devoted to her family. She married her beloved Alfred in 1955 and together they celebrated 55 years of marriage before his untimely passing in 2010. Her most important role, however, was that of “Mom”, and she loved to dote on her children and grandchildren. An ever-present influence in their lives, she could be counted on to drop everything to help them in any situation.
She also took immense pride in her gardens. Known as Farmer Smith in the neighborhood, you could find Carolyn at work outside almost year-round; working to maintain and beautify the yards of not only herself; but assisting her neighbors as well.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alfred T. Smith; son Robert Smith; and siblings Pauline Pinnick, Barbara Click, and Peggy Welch.
She is survived by her children Ralph Smith, Bruce E. Smith (Deborah), William Smith (Suzanne), and Keith Smith (Rebecca); 6 grandchildren, as well as 3 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, from 4 – 8 pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229). A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 11:30 am, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church (4650 North Shadeland Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46226). Burial will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46250) following mass.
