Carolyn Marie Schultz (Tromley), 78, of Avon, Indiana, entered heaven on January 9, 2026. She was born on December 26, 1947, in Vincennes, Indiana, to Christopher and Anne Tromley. One of eleven children, Carolyn dearly loved her siblings. As the second youngest, she spent countless hours babysitting nieces and nephews for her older siblings, forming special bonds that helped shape her nurturing, maternal nature and prepared her for the family she would one day build.
Carolyn met the love of her life, David L. Schultz, through mutual friends. They were married on January 28, 1967, and shortly thereafter moved to Anchorage, Alaska at the start of David’s service in the United States Air Force. After returning to Indiana and welcoming their two children, Carolyn earned her associate’s degree in accounting from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1997.
Known for her precision and attention to detail, Carolyn could balance a checkbook down to the penny. She applied that same dedication while working in the accounting department for Indianapolis Public Schools, where she remained until her retirement in 2011. She was thorough, hardworking, and firmly believed that if something wasn’t going to be done correctly, it wasn’t worth doing at all.
Carolyn was a devoted wife to David. Together, they enjoyed traveling across the United States with their children and later in life on their motorcycle. They loved golfing and spending time with friends. Carolyn faithfully packed David’s lunches and made sure he was sent off well-fed for his fishing and hunting trips. Their marriage was a true testament to love, devotion, and loyalty—core values that were passed down through generations.
Carolyn was well known for her homemade cinnamon rolls and her unmatched fried chicken. A wonderful cook, she spent many hours in the kitchen with her family, especially her grandchildren. They fondly remember her famous pancake breakfasts after sleepovers or the simple comfort of a peeled, cubed apple for a snack. In her earlier years, Carolyn enjoyed cross-stitching and created beautiful, personalized pieces for friends and family, each made with love. She also enjoyed working on puzzles and helping David with the daily crossword. Athletic in her youth, she never passed up a game of wiffle ball with her grandkids. She cherished long phone conversations with her sister Helen and her best friend, Marty.
Carolyn was many things to many people, but she was truly destined to be a mother and grandmother. She never missed an opportunity to support her children in their extracurricular activities, a devotion that carried on to her grandchildren. She attended countless softball, soccer, volleyball, and choir events, always cheering from the sidelines with her familiar, “Let’s go girls!” Her love for her grandchildren was undeniable. Becoming a great-grandmother in 2015 brought her immense joy, and the presence of little ones brought comfort and happiness as her mind declined. Even until the end, their presence brought a smile to her face.
Carolyn’s nurturing spirit, selflessness, and easygoing nature will be cherished, remembered, and deeply missed. She was truly one of a kind—simple, genuine, and overflowing with love. Her family often joked that everyone needs a “Carolyn” in their pocket. She will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing her.
Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband, David L. Schultz; her loving children, Janet Yonts and Gregory (Barbara) Schultz; her beloved grandchildren, Katelyn (Scott), Samantha (Jon), Kristen (Brandon), Savanna (Isaac), Sophie, Nick (Carly), and Mariah; her great-grandchildren, Javelin, Maddox, Marvelynn, Charlie, Mariah, Morgan, Caroline, Chosen, and a baby boy expected in May 2026; her siblings, Helen Thomas and Joe Tromley; as well as countless nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family members, and friends.
She is reunited in heaven with her parents, Christopher and Anne Tromley; her siblings, Norma, Margaret, John, Raymond, Chris, Jim, Paul, and George; and her son-in-law, Gene Yonts.
