Carolyn Brokaw

September 17, 1922 — April 3, 2012

Carolyn Elizabeth "Betty" Brokaw (nee Farmer), 89, Indianapolis, formerly of Zionsville, IN and Cincinnati, OH, died on April 3. She was born in Evansville, Indiana on September 17, 1922, to the late Robert and Edythe (Seiler) Farmer. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, James Edward Brokaw, on November 7, 2011. She graduated from the Deaconess Scholl of Nursing in Evansville in 1946. She married James Brokaw on July 1, 1951. Betty was proud to be a "stay-at-home" mom during her children's early years, but returned to work as an R.N. at Hoosier Village Nursing Home in Zionsville in the late 60's, then St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis and finally at Bethesda North Hospital in suburban Cincinnati. She retired in the early 1980's and in retirement enjoyed traveling with her husband to Elderhostel programs throughout the United States. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, needlework and gardening; her quilts warm the beds of her newlywed and college-aged grandchildren across the country. She was always happiest in the company of her husband, children and grandchildren. Betty was a former member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Montgomery, OH and St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Carmel, IN. She was most recently a member of St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church in Zionsville, IN. She is survived by her children: Dr. Susan Brokaw (Dr. Dirk Wonnell), Steven Brokaw (Stephanie), Robert Brokaw (Jill), Dr. David Brodaw (Christine), Carol Brokaw Brightwell and nine grandchildren: Luke Wonnell (Lauren), Clay Wonnell, Keith Brokaw, David Brokaw, Grant Brokaw, Mattie Brokaw, James Brokaw, John Brokaw and Tyler Brightwell. Services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 11th at St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church, 1525 Mulberry St, Zionsville, IN. Contributions, if so inclined, may be made to the Deaconess Hospital Foundation, Nursing Scholarship, 600 St. Mary St. Evansville, IN 47747.
