Carol M. Scheller

Carol O’Brien Scheller (91) of Carmel, Indiana died June 21, 2024. Born in 1933 in Plattsburgh, New York to the late Hugh and Carolyn O’Brien. Carol spent early years in Troy, NY as well as South Bend, IN. Carol is survived by 5 children and one sister. She was predeceased by the love of her life, her loving husband of 66 years, Vincent J. Scheller, son Michael, brothers John O’Brien and Robert O’Brien.

Survivors include daughters Maureen Coffin, Beth Green (Mike), sons Stephen (Maureen Costello), David (Ann Marie Games), Tom (Paula Blackmon), and sister Angela Weaver (Larry). Nine grandchildren survive: Mary Kuhl (Tyler), Caitlin VanderKlok (Ross), Charlie (Marcella Hoard), Stephen (Leah Gilligan), Drew Green (Jessica Sidebottom), Quinn (Emily Ross), Tori Mattingly (Chase), Olivia Games, David Coffin.  Six great grandchildren survive: James, Brooks, Wesley, Henry, Grant, Jack as well as many nieces and nephews. 

Carol graduated from John Adams High School, South Bend, IN, Holy Cross Central School of Nursing and St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame IN in 1954.  She received her Master of Nursing degree from Indiana University in 1987.  She practiced nursing at VA Hospital Indianapolis, Methodist Hospital and Indiana University until her retirement in 1991. 

Carol enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the Indianapolis Museum of Art Gift Shop.  She loved to travel and particularly enjoyed the East Coast of US, Ireland & France. She was an avid reader and loved being a long-time member of Marian’s Book Club. Carol loved to cook and entertain; she was a compassionate soul and a good listener. 

A mass of Christian burial will take place at 11:00am on Friday, June 28, 2024 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Carmel, Indiana with visitation there from 10:00-11:00am. Mass will be followed by interment and a celebration of life at Oaklawn Cemetery, Conner Suite at 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN. 

The family gives their profound thanks for the compassionate care given at St. Vincent Hospital Carmel and Compassus Hospice.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders or a charity of your choice.  Arrangements entrusted to Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.  Online condolences may be shared at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
