Carol J. Griswold

Carol J. (Huber) Griswold, 86, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026. Born on June 8, 1940, in Starlight, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. Huber and Mary Catherine (Koetter) Huber.

Carol was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a radiant smile, an adventurous spirit, and a gift for making people feel welcome. A cherished friend to many and deeply loved by all who knew her, she went out of her way to help others, treating everyone with kindness and always looking after those in need. One of her guiding beliefs was “We are on earth to help each other,” and her life stood as a quiet, steadfast testimony to that conviction.

She devoted more than thirty years to the medical field, first serving in the Infectious Diseases department at Wishard Hospital and later continuing her work at the Marion County Health Department, where she was instrumental in setting up the department’s response to the AIDS crisis in the early 1980s. Carol earned her RN degree from St. Joseph’s Infirmary and went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Indiana University.

Carol grew up as the ninth of eleven children on the family farm in Starlight, where she tended a variety of fruits and vegetables and developed a lifelong love of the outdoors and the beauty of nature. Even as an adult she returned home on weekends to help, carrying that sense of rootedness and responsibility with her always. Her nieces and nephews affectionately referred to her as a “flower child” or their “hippie aunt,” a reflection of her free spirit, joyful nature, and contagious zest for life. One of her most cherished trademarks was her Volkswagen Bug, plastered with crazy daisies. She delighted in whisking her nieces away for adventures around the city, creating memories they continue to treasure.

In her free time Carol delighted in cooking and was especially known for her fruit salad. She deepened her passion for the kitchen by taking cooking classes in Italy. For more than thirty-five years she shared regular games of Bridge with a close circle of friends. A valued member of Indianapolis Reads, she enjoyed gathering with fellow book lovers at the Indy Reads bookstore and volunteered her time helping children learn to read. The children especially loved when she sang her favorite song about ducks and geese. She also volunteered at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, finding genuine joy in encouraging young minds and sharing laughter with those around her.

Alongside her beloved husband, Jim, Carol loved to travel. Together they enjoyed countless adventures, from sailing and snow skiing to discovering new places and meeting new people. They believed life was meant to be experienced and lived it to the fullest. Whether exploring close to home or traveling the world, Carol embraced life with curiosity, optimism, and joy.

Her home was always a welcoming place. Carol loved gathering family and friends around her table, opening both her home and her heart with warmth, kindness, and gracious hospitality. She treasured time spent with those she loved and had a special gift for making everyone feel like family.

One of the greatest blessings of Carol’s life was her enduring friendship with Jan Link. For more than forty years, they shared a bond built on love, laughter, unwavering loyalty, and countless memories. Jan lovingly cared for her throughout the later years of her life, a beautiful testament to the depth of their friendship.

Carol is survived by her siblings Larry (Cindy) Huber, Dorris Wathen, Sister Kathryn Huber, OSB, and Cecelia D’Apice; stepdaughters Marcia Gurno and Julie Stepp; special friend Jan Link; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Griswold; her parents; her brothers Paul Huber, Charles Huber, Norbert Huber, Joseph Huber Jr., and David Huber; her sister Sr. Rosemary Huber, MM.; her stepdaughter Virginia Chandler; and her grandson David Chandler.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 5692 Central Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46220, followed immediately by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
