Carol Rinehart Highbaugh Chambers, 89, of Indianapolis died on December 2, 2022, at Grandbrook Memory Care in Greenwood, Indiana.
Carol was born on August 5, 1933, in Cass County to Mary Berniece Wagoner Rinehart and Jacob Earl Rinehart. She was a 1951 graduate of Logansport High School and a 1955 graduate of Ball State University, where she earned a BS degree in childhood education. She also attended Butler University, where she earned an MS degree in early childhood education and a Life Teaching License.
In August 1954 Carol married Larry Bryant Highbaugh of Anderson, Indiana. Carol and Larry taught in New Carlisle, Indiana, and in Logansport, Indiana, before settling in Indianapolis to teach in Wayne Township Schools. Carol loved being with children, and she taught hundreds of them in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade. Additionally, she taught music and art. Both Carol and Larry were active in Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and in Optimist Club International. They loved travel and antiquing, and they hosted many foreign exchange students in their home over the years. Larry died in 2001.
Carol later married Ronald Chambers and lived on his farm near Galveston, Indiana until his death in 2011. They were active in Upper Deer Creek Church.
Carol is survived by four children: Nancy Demougin of Indianapolis; Paula Gaddis of Franklin, Tennessee; Gregory Highbaugh of Indianapolis; and Heidi Van Duzer of Indianapolis. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Gregory Highbaugh, Kristin Proctor, Matthew Gaddis, Abigale Davis, Jaclyn Van Duzer, Danielle Van Duzer, Isaac Chambers, and Luke Chambers. Carol was also the proud great grandmother of eleven. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Richard Rinehart of Carroll County, Indiana.
Carol was preceded in death by brothers Robert, Donald, and John Rinehart, and by her sister, Deloris Mullin.
Calling will be at Flanner Buchanan – Speedway at 2950 N. High School Road in Indianapolis from 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 7 and at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church from 10 – 11 a.m. December 8. Funeral services will be at Chapel Hill UMC at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 8. Interment will be at West Ridge Park Cemetery following the funeral.
