Carl Robert Stewart Sr.

Carl Robert Stewart Sr., 91, of Indianapolis, IN passed away on Saturday August 1st 2026.

He was born in Marion County to Harry Sr and Gertrude Stewart on August 18th 1934. He was raised in Valley Mills along with his seven siblings.

Carl was a hard worker from a very young age. His first job was working along side his grandfather in a butchershop. As he grew up, he moved on to the Atlas Supermarket and then Peerless Furnace. He then met the love of his life, and to make sure he was able to support Anna, his future mother-in-law helped him get on at The Blue Bird Pie Company. He was actually making deliveries on his wedding day, and due to inclimate weather he hit a patch of ice and rolled his truck. But no need to worry, as he called for help, finished his deliveries and made it to the ceremony in the nick of time. Shortly thereafter he was drafted into the army. While working for the government, his first child was born and soon afterward both mother and child were able to join Carl in Oklahoma. After his enlistment was over, the Stewart family moved back home to Indiana.

Needing to support his family, Carl started work as the credit manager for the Porter Paint Company. He also would work after hours painting for his customers. When he wasn't painting, or spending time with his family, Carl worked for Pinkerton Security Services, and coached or umpired his children's little league games.

Carl was not one to let grass grow under his feet, so after 20 years, he left Porter, he started working for MSD of Pike Township as the supervisor of grounds and maintenance and subbed as a bus driver. He worked for the school system until his retirement. But again, he became restless and started working for Flanner and Buchanan.

Since by this time all of his children were grown, he occupied his spare time with a membership to Beef and Boards where he enjoyed many evenings alongside his adoring wife.

Besides his work history, Carl was also very active as a Sunday School Superintendent, trustee and church treasurer. He was very active in his 54 year membership in the Pike Lions Club. Carl held many positions, worked on numerous projects among them being hearing tests, eyeglass program, and 500 race day ticket sales, and won many awards. Carl was also a boy scout leader, and bowled for a church sponsored league where again, he won many trophies. If this wasn't enough, he helped to build three houses, one each in Indianapolis, Henryville, and Connersville. He loved to help his family flourish.

Carl also enjoyed going to the movie with Anna, and was an avid card player. Him and Anna taught all of their kids how to play Rook, Canasta, Euchre, Poker and Solitaire, along with Dominoes, and Tri-ominos. Besides coaching sports Carl loved to watch them as well. His favorites teams included the Indianapolis Indians, the Colts, the Reds, the St. Louis Cards, the Pacers and of course the Indy 500 and the Brickyard.

Carl us survived by his wife of 70 years Anna Kathryn, his daughter Shannon Dice (Paul), his seven grand children, Dustan Smith, Christian Ostermeier, Joshua Stewart, Jessica Mella (Jeremy), Dylan Stewart, Brock Stewart, and Samantha Howard (Joe), and his 3 great grandchildren, Autumn, Micah, and Essilee Smith.

Carl is preceded in death by his Parents Harry and Gertrude Stewart, his children Autumn Lee Smith, Carl Jr (Robbie), and Jeff Stewart, as well as his seven siblings Harry Jr, Charles, Mary Ann, George Stewart, Patty Jean Adam's, Hilton Lee (Bud), and Carol Stewart.

Visitation will be held on Friday August 7th, 2926 at Flanner and Buchanan Memorial Park Cemetary from 11am to 1pm with the service immediately afterwards.
