Calvin Robert Clear, 88, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away 19 April 2013 with his family by his side. He was born in Cambria, IN on 27 February 1925.
On 7 September 1947, he married Marytha Dell Phillippe, at Mulberry Methodist Church and later fathered three children.
Calvin graduated from Rossville High School in 1943. He attended Wabash College in 1943, Glenview Naval Air Station in 1944, St. Olaf's College in 1944, State University of Iowa in 1944, Ottumwa Naval Air Station in 1945, Purdue University in 1946, and Purdue University Extension in Indianapolis 1946-1947. In 1946, he worked at Ben Hinshaw's Furniture Store as a television (TV) and radio repairman and appliance serviceman. As a pioneer, he began repairing TV's as they were introduced to the state of Indiana in 1949. During the 1950's he worked for Uffman's Furniture Store. From 1966 to 1968, he worked for Howard Sam's. In 1968, he followed his passion and established Clear TV, a television repair company based on Christian principals. Clear TV became widely known and loved. Calvin continued television repairs until his passing.
Calvin will be remembered for his love of bowling and participation on many different leagues and tournaments through the years. He met many friends and was able to share this passion with his children and grandchildren.
Most notably he will be remembered for his kind heart and loving nature to all who knew him. He devoted himself to the Lutheran faith at Grace Lutheran Church and later Messiah Lutheran Church of Eagle Creek. He volunteered his services to both church and family needs. He also dedicated many years to the Lutheran Child and Family Services at the Sharing Place West. In 2004, Calvin received The President's Volunteer Service Award in recognition of his commitment to strengthening our Nation and making a difference through volunteer service. With this in mind, he also served our nation during WWII in the Navy Air Corps as a pilot and later became a member of the American Legion in Speedway, IN.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marytha Clear; three children, Daniel (Cynthia) Clear of Indianapolis, Helen (Dr. Charles) Hodges of Brownsburg, and Steven Clear of Sedona, AZ; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and a brother David (Phyllis) Clear of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Azza (Bogue) Clear; and a brother Paul (Alice) Clear.
Memorial contributions can be made to Messiah Lutheran Church at Eagle Creek, 6100 N Raceway Rd, Indianapolis, IN, 46234 for the Summer Bible Camp program or to the American Heart Association.
Calling will be held on Wednesday April 24, 2013 at Flanner and Buchanan-Speedway from 6:00-8:00 pm. Then on Thursday April 25, 2013 calling will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church at Eagle Creek 6100 North Raceway Road Indianapolis, IN 46234 beginning at 10 am followed by the funeral service beginning at 11 am. Burial will be in West Ridge Park Cemetery.
