Byron H. Blankenbaker, aged 82, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, in Westfield, Indiana. Born on September 20, 1942, in New Albany, Indiana, Byron led a life characterized by dedication, love, and a profound sense of faith.
A proud husband to his wife Karen, with whom he shared 47 wonderful years of marriage, Byron was a steadfast figure in his family's life. He worked diligently as a grocery produce manager at Richard's Market Basket and later at O'Malia's, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a commitment to serving his community. He was a man of many passions, with a deep affection for nature, gardening, and exploring the great outdoors, particularly during hikes in Brown County Parks. Byron's interests extended to cars, building models, and volunteering at church, where his generous spirit left a mark on many.
Byron had an incredible ability to connect with others; he was known as an amazing listener who engaged in meaningful conversations. His love for music resonated throughout his life, and he found joy in the simplest moments spent with family, especially with the children. He is remembered for his love of John Deere tractors and spending time at the shooting range, pursuits that exemplified his adventurous spirit.
Despite facing the challenges of Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia for 18 years, Byron maintained his dignity and unwavering faith. He was a man who always put God first, and this devotion shaped how he lived and loved.
He leaves behind a cherished family, including his devoted wife, Karen Blankenbaker, their beloved special pet, Katie Jane, as well as his godchildren: Sarah Elizabeth Pickett, John Leo Bea, and Sophia Abigail Curley.
Byron is preceded in death by his mother, Mildred (Uppling) Blankenbaker, and his father, William H. Blankenbaker, as well as his brothers: John, Samuel, Richard, and William Blankenbaker.
Visitation will be held at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Westfield, Indiana, on June 7, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Mass at 11:00 AM.. This service will honor a life well-lived, celebrating the legacy of love Byron has left behind. His memory will forever resonate with those who knew him, reminding us of the importance of family, faith, and the beauty of nature.
