Bruce Charles Smith (age 78) passed away on November 14, 2025, after a battle with cancer.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 55 years, Deborah Burnett Smith, two sons – Matthew (JoEllen) and Andrew (Anlize), a brother Gilbert W. Smith II, five grandchildren (Zachary, Abigail, Molly, Madeline and Rosalie) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents, Ruth Lumpkin Smith and Gilbert W. Smith, predeceased him.
Most of Bruce’s adult life was spent as a newspaper reporter. He started at the Indianapolis Star in 1970 where he received numerous awards for writing. He retired from The Star 42 years later. The friendships he made with his coworkers meant the world to him. He also was Executive Assistant to Indianapolis Mayor William H. Hudnut who brought the Colts to Indianapolis. After retiring from The Star, Bruce became involved with the Town of Plainfield – serving for several years on the Plainfield Plan Commission and the Design and Review Committee. Gardening was a passion in the summer and he donated his bounty to the area food pantries and his neighbors. He was a curious individual who also loved to talk at length about community and world events.
