Bradford “Brad” Guy Stevens, a familiar figure in the paddocks of Indy-car racing for a number of years, passed away on Thursday, January 13, in Indianapolis. He was 75.
Mr. Stevens was born in Winfield, Kansas, on Nov. 28, 1946, to Russell O. Stevens and Margerat T. Bumgarner Stevens. He was a 1964 graduate of Onteora Central High School in Woodstock, NY, and attended Community College of New York. He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967, which included a tour in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
Following his military service, he was employed by a number of companies including NBC and a French oil/gas exploration company known as CGG. In 1992, he began what would be the final phase of his career—working in the sport of Indy-car racing in a variety of positions. He was the director of marketing for Bettenhausen Motorsports before moving to a similar position with American Spirit Racing. In 2004, he became a client relations manager for Champ Car. After Champ Car merged with the Indy Racing League in 2008, he was hired as director of the Indy-car racing program for Holmatro, a Dutch-based safety tools manufacturer that maintained a number of offices throughout the United States and also sponsored the official IndyCar Safety Team. He retired at the end of the 2018 season.
He survived by: cousins Meredith (Jack) Parry; Lex Bachus; Tim (Nicole) Bachus; Victoria (Trenton Wise) Parry and sons Easton, Porter and Aksel; Holly and Kent Parkison and son Kody (Melissa) and daughters Sophia, Makenna and Gabby; Tokin (Scott) Blackford and children Brooks, Parker and Bailey; and close friends Rick and Melissa Rowe. Services will be held on Friday, Feb. 4, at 1 pm at the Flanner Buchanan—Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Boulevard West Drive, Indianapolis with visitation an hour prior to the service. The family has requested in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to either IndyCar Ministry or the Indy Family Foundation.
