Billie D. Burton

February 12, 1934 — September 25, 2025

Fishers, IN

With love and gratitude for a life well lived, we share that Bill D. Burton, 91, of Fishers, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 12:26 a.m. He was born on February 12, 1934, in Brodhead, Kentucky, to the late W. Dawson Burton and Dessie Pruitt (Todd).

Bill spent his early years in Brodhead, before moving with his family to Indianapolis at age 16. He graduated from George Washington High School and proudly served in the Armed Forces Reserves from 1953 to 1955. He then began a long career with Indianapolis Power & Light Company, dedicating more than 40 years of faithful service before retiring.

Bill was blessed to share his life with Shirley Craney (Smith), whom he married on June 16, 1955; Sharon Jean (Carmichael) Burton, married on October 14, 1963; and Barbara (Bernhard) Burton, married on December 12, 2009; all of whom preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children, Kimberly K. (Richard) Brickley, Mark A. (Tina) Burton, and Craig D. Burton; six grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Kate Schubert. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, and his siblings, Mable Sutton, Hazel Palmer, and Robert Burton.

Bill embodied the idea of a patriarch. He was kind, warm, and devoted to the well-being of his family. He cherished simple pleasures, like cooking for his family and making the best fried potatoes, or taking everyone to his favorite Hibachi grill, was happiest in good company. Whether at the golf course, by the horse-shoe pit, or on the tennis court, it was the people that Bill shared his time with that brought him the most joy. In moments of solitude, he relaxed at home with a crossword puzzle, a good book, or a favorite movie.

Bill will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis alongside his wife, Sharon. Honoring his wishes, there will be no formal service; a private celebration of life will be held with family.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Bill's memory to Bosma Visionary Opportunities Foundation.
