Beverly Jean Swope, 91, passed away at her Indianapolis home on Thursday, January 13, 2022, while surrounded by her loved ones. She was born October 11, 1930, to Hazel and John Grob in Indianapolis, Indiana. Beverly often talked about her childhood and how much she loved her parents and adored her younger sister Suzanne, whose lifelong friendship she cherished. Beverly attended Broad Ripple High School and graduated in 1948. She graduated from Butler University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree and in 1968 with a Master of Science degree. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She started her teaching career with IPS and also taught for several other schools in and around the Indianapolis area. Her gift in the classroom was helping children with special learning challenges. She was a tireless and gifted tutor for students, kids in the neighborhood, and adults through her service at Broadway. She married James W. Swope, her high-school sweetheart, in August 1952, at Broadway United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. She considered her marriage to James to be the most valuable and important part of her life. They shared over 59 years together. Jim passed away April 5, 2011. Beverly was a devoted wife and beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to her three children, and seven grandchildren. Her children feel very fortunate to have had her as their mother. She was a lifelong member of Broadway United Methodist Church and believed that we should treat each other with kindness and help those in need. Over the years she participated in many service activities, most notably The Christmas Store Ministry. Beverly never met a stranger and could talk to anyone. She enjoyed meeting new people and learning about their culture. She always took time to stop and smell the roses and was accepting of all people. She loved nature, her gardens and flowers, reading, her home, her family, and cheating at croquet and board games. After retirement, she and Jim spent summers in Colorado in their log cabin. They were frequent travelers earlier in retirement, spending many winter months in Arizona. Beverly was preceded in death by her daughter, Caroline. She is survived by her sister, Suzanne J. McFall; children, Geoff Swope, Kathy Jensen, and Karen Campbell; and grandchildren, Jonathan, Melanie, and Philip Swope; Lauren, Alex, and Nick Jensen; and Trig Campbell. No services are planned. Beverly will be laid to rest in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Memorial contributions may be made to Broadway United Methodist Church, 609 E. 29th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46205.
