Indianapolis

Betty Jane Shalter, age 99, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, January 16, 2026, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Betty was born on October 10, 1926, in Reading, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Reading and graduated from Wyomissing High School. She later attended Pennsylvania State University, graduated in 1948 with a degree in dietetics – a profession that would shape her life’s work and service.

She married William Henry Shalter, who predeceased her. Following their move to Indianapolis, Betty began her career as a dietitian at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Indiana. She later joined Indiana University Hospital, where she served for more than 20 years, specializing in renal care.

A woman of steady faith, Betty was a devoted member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where she participated in women’s Bible studies and served on the altar guild. Her faith quietly guided her daily life and her service to others.

Betty found great joy in knitting, a pastime that reflected her generous spirit. She donated countless handmade caps and sweaters to hospital maternity departments, offering warmth and care to newborns and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Shalter, and her son, William D. Shalter.

Betty is survived by her sister, Shirley Jackson, of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania; her daughters Jane (Bradley) Philbrick and Beth Ann Shalter; her grandchildren, Rebekah (Daniel) Hall, William (Melissa) Shalter, and Andrew (Cassie) Philbrick; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street) from 12 pm – 2 pm with funeral services following at 2 pm. Burial will take place at Washington Park East Cemetery following services.

Betty will be remembered for her devotion to family, her lifelong service to others, her quiet faith, and the warmth she extended through both her profession and her hands.

Memorial donations can be made in Betty's name to Bethany Lutheran Church or The Gideons International.
