Betty Katherine (French) Unkel

Betty Katherine (French) Unkel, age 95, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2016. She was born May 19, 1920 in Springfield, Ohio to Marion J. and Frances Elizabeth Ross French. She graduated from Springfield High School (1938), and The Ohio State University (1942) with a degree in Hospital Dietetics. While at Ohio State, she was initiated into Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity, and Omicron Nu – Home Economics Honorary. She married H. Richard (Dick) Unkel in 1943 and celebrated over 54 years of married life together until his death in November 1997. Mrs. Unkel served in a number of alumnae leadership positions of Alpha Xi Delta fraternity, culminating as national president from 1976-1978. She was also active in PEO International, Home Economists in Homemaking, and The Ohio State University Women’s Club of Indianapolis. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for 58 years, and 40 year volunteer at Methodist Hospital. She was an enthusiastic supporter of The Ohio State University, loved playing bridge and traveling, and was the consummate hostess. Her sister, Marianne F. Weiss predeceased her. She is survived by nieces and nephews Col (ret) John P. Weiss, Carol Shapiro Lauvray, Steven P. Weiss and Susan M. McKinley; 9 great nieces and nephews; and 3 great great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 3-5pm, Sunday May 1st. Funeral service Monday, May 2nd at 9am, followed by interment at Washington Park Cemetery North. Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple, 1305 East Broad Ripple Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46220 is handling arrangements.
