Betty Jane Barto, 89, died on December 28, 2013 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born in Buffalo, NY on December 26, 1924. Betty was predeceased by her husband, James L. Barto. She was survived by two children: Mary H Graham (Michael) of Indianapolis and James C Barto (Susan Koppen) of Atlanta, GA. Betty was also survived by four grandchildren: Jeffrey Andritz, Melissa Andritz, Alex Barto and Peter Barto.
Betty served as a yeoman in the Navy during World War II. While stationed in Bremerton, WA, she met her future husband Jim Barto, who was also in the Navy. Both attended Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA following discharge through the benefits of the GI bill. The couple moved to western New York and later to Pittsburgh, PA in 1969, where they resided until 2006. They most recently lived at Robin Run Village in Indianapolis.
While living in Pittsburgh, Betty was an avid gardener and served for a number of years as a volunteer for an Easter Seals daycare program. She was an active member of St. Alexis Catholic Church.
