Betty Heppner, 96, of Indianapolis passed away September 26, 2021. A long time Indianapolis resident, Betty enjoyed summers at Grand Lake St. Mary’s in Ohio. Betty was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School and Central Normal College. She started her teaching career (in physical education) at Trafalgar High School and continued at Noblesville Junior High School, (1959-1985) where she was a drama coach, as well as the coach of the Noblesville Skeeters Gymnastics Team.
She was a National NAWGJ (Gymnastics) judge and a State Judging Director. She served two terms as the president of the International Travel Study Club, and was a member of the Inwood Park Chapter. Betty was a member of Northwest Christian Church (Columbus, OH), Daughters of the American Revolution, and was an active member of OASIS and the American Turners/Athenaeum. She was both the founder of and an inductee in the Indiana Gymnastics Hall of Fame, as well an inductee of the Noblesville High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Heppner, Sr. and her son James L. Heppner, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Jan Heppner-McConathy (Rob), granddaughter Katherine Heppner, great grandson James Heppner, and her canine companion, Sophie.
Calling hours are at Flanner Buchanan – Broad Ripple on Friday, October 1, 2021 from 3-7 PM. Services, officiated by Rev. Cindy Adcock, will be on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Flanner Buchanan – Broad Ripple at 1:00 PM, following visitation at 12:00 PM. Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery, with a reception afterwards at Flanner Buchanan – Broad Ripple.
