Betty Louise Dunkel, 96, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026. She was born at home on November 18, 1929, to Ira and Adalee Jordan. She grew up in Bowling Green, IN and in Indianapolis where she attended George Washington High School. Betty married Lowell Scotten in 1948. They were married for more than 25 years and had three children. In1975, Betty married Wayne Dunkel. That marriage added four stepchildren to Betty’s family.
Betty loved to shop so a career in retail was ideal for her. She started as a salesclerk at Goldblatt’s and survived many mergers and acquisitions, eventually retiring as the manager of several departments at Macy’s.
After her retirement Betty focused on her favorite activities. Sewing was by far her favorite thing to do. She sewed almost every day until she could no longer see well enough to do it. She was an excellent seamstress throughout her life. She won awards for the clothing she made even when she was just in high school. She made all sorts of things from clothing to tote bags, and even window treatments. If she saw something she liked she could recreate it, in many cases, without a pattern. She also liked various forms of embroidery, especially cross stitch, as well as knitting and crocheting.
Betty was very active with Oasis, both as a participant and as a volunteer. Through them she made many friends, learned new things, and traveled to places she never expected to visit including Alaska and several countries in Europe.
Betty is survived by her three children, Marcia Rutz (Richard), Neil Scotten (Sally), and Kent Scotten (Jean), as well as by her three stepdaughters, Lynn Brandt (Robert), Kim Seyfried (John), and Lisa Feldhake (Kristofer). She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, and her stepson, Michael (Colleen) as well as by her two brothers, Robert Jordan (Judy) and Jack Jordan (Sandy). She was the proud grandmother and great grandmother of 27.
Betty was a fun person with a great smile. She was also more than a little feisty. You always knew where you stood with her, like it or not. She will be missed in so many ways.
A visitation will be held at John Knox Presbyterian Church on at 10:00 on Wednesday, May 27, followed by a funeral service at 11:00.
