Beth Elaine “Betsy” Harvey, 61, found her rest in God on Saturday, August 15th, after a prolonged illness. A beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend, Betsy will be deeply missed.
Born in Indianapolis on May 23, 1965, to Anita and Earl Johnson, Betsy was the third of four children. After graduating from North Central High School, Betsy went on to graduate from Auburn University in 1987. At Auburn, she was a dedicated member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She later earned her J.D. from Indiana University School of Law in 1995.
It was during her time in law school that Betsy met the love of her life, Bill, a medical resident. That was the beginning of Bill and Betsy’s courtship and led to their marriage on June 1, 1996.
Over 30 years of marriage, Betsy and Bill shared a full and happy life—laughing, birdwatching, attending concerts, and enjoying evenings with friends. The time they most enjoyed, though, was the time they spent with their four children. Kiawah Island was a favorite spot for the family to spend time - bicycling to get ice cream after dinner, playing on the beach, and making lasting memories as a family. Betsy often said that of all her roles, being a mother was the best one.
Betsy never knew a stranger and could frequently be found chatting with someone she had just met. One of her gifts was making and keeping friends, from playing softball as a teenager, volunteering at her children’s schools, to supporting those she befriended during her illness. Betsy had a generous spirit and gave her time and energy freely. Later in life she discovered a love of running, completing numerous races including a marathon.
A lifelong Christian, Betsy found comfort in her faith as she fought cancer and faced death with grace. She is survived by her husband, Bill; her children, Andrew (Mary), Phoebe, Claudia, and Philip; her siblings, Ron Johnson, Anne Johnson, and Eric Johnson and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anita and Earl Johnson.
Services will be held Saturday, August 22nd, at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN. The family will be receiving visitors at 12:30pm with a service commencing at 1:30. Following the service, burial will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery – 9700 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46250.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to further Glioblastoma research with the American Cancer Society.
