Bertha Alice Leak
96, went home on May 3rd surrounded by those she loved. Bertha was born on February 4, 1922 to the late Chester and Mary Hammer of Mooresville Indiana.
Bertha was one of eight siblings and raised on a farm in Camby Indiana and then later in Mooresville Indiana. Bertha graduated from Plainfield High School in 1940. She worked from an early teen at her uncle’s pharmacy (Fritz’s Pharmacy) on the near Westside of Indianapolis. Bertha also worked for RCA for a time. Bertha and her husband, Bill, owned and operated Leak’s Drugs on the corner of Richland and Howard Street for 15 years. The two of them also owned and managed many rental properties.
Bertha was a servant to her Lord, family and community.
A lifetime member of Lynhurst Baptist Church, Bertha recently attended Greenwood Baptist Church for the last several years.
Bertha raised 2 children, inspired 7 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great-Great Grandchild.
Bertha was a founding member of WIDC (West Indianapolis Development Corporation), and was on the Southwest Health Center Community Board of Directors for many, many years. Bertha was also appointed by the governor (Otis Bowen) to the Indiana State Capital Health Advisory Council. Bertha was on the West Indianapolis Neighborhood Congress, The White River Park Development Council, a Den Mother for the Scouts, and a PTA officer for school 49. Bertha was involved in the redevelopment and building of the Mary Riggs Community Center where she volunteered for the Westside Senior Citizens, located at that center, for almost 30 years. Bertha was a recipient of the Esther Cauble West Indianapolis Community Service Award, The Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Westside Exchange Club and the Burnhart Service Award.
Bertha was preceded in death by the love of her life…. William (Bill) Leak, her beloved son Michael Leak and precious granddaughters Melissa Leak-McMichael and Teressa Leak (infant)
Bertha is survived by her daughter Linda (John) Sheets, Daughter-in-Law Janice (Michael) Leak, Grandchildren Mark (Gloria) Bray, Jennifer (Steve) Leak-Davis, Brian (Mandy) Bray, Jeff (Tracy Burns) Leak, and Michelle (Alex) Butler. Great-Grandchildren, Drew & Cody Bray, Blake Davis, Erika Leak, Devin Bray, Emily Leak, Abby Bray, and Makenzie Bray. Great-Great Grandchild, Cade Bray.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 6, 2018 from 2 to 6 pm at Flanner Buchanan-Decatur Township. Services will be Monday, May 7, 2018 at 11 am at Flanner Buchanan-Decatur Township. Burial will follow at Fairfield Friends Cemetery.
