Indianapolis – Bernadetta “Bernie” L. (Roell) Johnson, 89, of Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2022. She had been married to Paul H. Johnson for almost 63 years, until he preceded her in death in 2018.

She was born in Indianapolis to the late Bruno and Irene (Toner) Roell in 1933. Bernie graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1951 and joined the workforce soon after. She spent the majority of her employment years as an office administrator in real estate development, later becoming a real estate agent, first with AHM Graves, and eventually retiring from ReMax.

During her simultaneous years of employment and raising children, she provided additional educational opportunities for them outside the classroom and was involved in their extracurricular school activities. She served as co-leader in a Brownie and later a Girl Scout troop, president of the I.P.S. Marshall High School M.A.M.A.’s club and was always present at their varied activities throughout the years. As grandchildren came along, she carried on in that same way supporting them at music, dance, theater, and sports events, and attending as many Grandparents’ Day events as possible.

Bernie is survived by her four adult children, Vicki Crabtree (John), Dennis (Brook), Doug (Christy), and Linda “Dee Dee” Mulcahy (Marty), twelve grandchildren; Amy Poer (Patrick), Jonathan (Stephanie), and Jordan Crabtree (Kate); Andrew, Chris, and Will Johnson; Doug (Katy), Evan, Ryan, and Margaret Johnson; and Rachel and Erin Mulcahy; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Her siblings Francis Roell, Anna Ashby, and Therese Wieneke also preceded her in death.

Bernie’s family would like to thank the staff at Five Star Residences of Clearwater and Wellbrooke of Carmel, Elara Caring Hospice, and Dr. Stephen Beck for her care during Bernie’s final years.

A Celebration of Life is planned for 1 p.m., Friday, November 25, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite). Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital (c/o St. Vincent Foundation, 8402 Harcourt Rd, Ste 210, Indianapolis, IN 46260).
