Barbara Jean Shutters

Barbara Jean Shutters (Hess), a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, in Fishers, Indiana. Born on March 21, 1945, in Williston, North Dakota, Barbara’s life was a tapestry woven with kindness, dedication, and a radiant spirit that touched all who knew her.

A proud graduate of Greensburg High School's class of 1963, Barbara's career was marked by unwavering commitment and excellence. She served with distinction as the Executive Administrative Assistant to the Director of Operations for the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA), a role that defined much of her professional legacy until her retirement in 2005. Prior to her tenure at ISTA, she contributed her talents in banking and at Indiana University's School of Nursing, showcasing a versatility and dedication that was admired by colleagues and friends alike.

Barbara's retirement was a much-anticipated new chapter - one she embraced with open arms and a heart full of love for her family. The joy of spending treasured moments with her grandchildren was paramount in her life thereafter, and she reveled in the warmth of family gatherings, particularly during the holidays. Her home was always a haven of hospitality, marked by her love of cooking and the prettiest flower boxes.

Known for her good spirits and a strong moral compass, Barbara lived a life grounded in sincerity and empathy. Her genuine concern for others was ever-present, and she cherished deeply the unbreakable bonds shared with her siblings Donna Justus (Frank), Russell Hess, and Carol Tucker. These relationships were pillars of support and joy throughout her lifetime.

Barbara leaves behind a loving family who carry forward her legacy: her son Timothy Shutters (Ann), her daughter Amy Beasley (Chuck), and her beloved grandchildren Claire Shutters, Sarah Shutters, Tanner Beasley (Victoria), Haylee Green (Randy), Jeremy Beasley, alongside her great-grandchildren Lila, Lawson, and Averett. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Eunice Hess, granddaughter Savannah Beasley, and ex-husband Thomas Shutters.

The community is invited to honor and celebrate the life of Barbara Jean Shutters. Visitation will be held on May 16, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Flanner Buchanan Funeral Centers - Speedway, located at 2950 N High School Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46224. This will be followed promptly by a Celebration of Life from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
