Averitte Wallace Corley
88, was born on October 11, 1927 to the lateAveritte H. Corley and Pauline Wallace. Averittelived in Atlanta, Indiana and graduated from Jackson Central High School. He was a WWII veteran of the US Marine Corpsand Congressional Gold Medal recipient awarded in 2012 for his service as anoriginal Montford Point Marine of which he is a Hall of Famer and member of thelocal Indianapolis Chapter 21. He wasalso a member of the American Legion Post #249. As a devoted public servant, Averitte was a retired Police Sergeant fromthe Indianapolis Police Department and retired United States Post OfficeSecurity Officer. He was a member of theAlpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Gamma Rho chapter having pledged during hismatriculation at Purdue University where he graduated with a BS degree inAgriculture. He earned a MS degree inGuidance and Counseling at Indiana University. Averitte married Dixie Ann Johnson in 1956 and they have enjoyed 59years of wedded bliss with two daughters, Deborah Ann Corley and Paula SueCorley. In his free time, Averitteenjoyed reading military history including the Tuskegee Airmen and the MontfordPoint Marines. He had a passion for listeningto jazz and blues music such as B.B. King and Tony Bennett. Averitte is preceded in death by hisbrother, Milton Baltimore, Jr. (Ruthann) and sister, Eleanor Frazier(Charles). He is survived by his wife,Dixie Ann (Johnson) Corley, daughters, Deborah Ann Corley and Paula Sue Corley,brother, Jerry C. Baltimore, sisters, Carole Rose (Jerome), Sheila Tignor(Clarence), and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
