Arlene Kay (Gilbert) Benton, 79, of Fishers, Indiana, peacefully went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2026. She was born on February 4, 1947, in Sizerock, Kentucky, to parents, Delbert Gilbert and Chloe (Couch) Gilbert.
Arlene graduated from Pike High School in 1965. She continued to keep in touch with high school friends throughout her life as an active member of her high school reunion committee.
One high school classmate set Arlene up on a blind date with his Army buddy by the name of Al Teter. That one blind date changed her life. Within 6 months, Al and Arlene were married! They remained happily married for over 30 years until Al’s death in 2000.
Several years after Al’s passing, a friend of Arlene’s introduced her to another kindhearted man by the name of Larry Benton. Spending time together getting to know each other wasn’t always easy since Larry lived almost two hours away. That didn’t stop them! Larry relocated so they could be together. They married in 2008.
Arlene took pride in being a wife, homemaker and mother. She devoted her life to raising her daughters, Pam and Monica. She encouraged and supported the girls in everything they did. She was their chauffeur to and from all their school and extracurricular activities. The station wagon and later mini-van were known as “Mom’s Taxi”!
Arlene loved dancing and listening to music. You could always catch her line dancing to her favorite country songs. She particularly preferred listening to 50’s and 60’s music and would play those genres frequently. Special times spent together with her sisters often included harmonizing church hymns they learned as children.
Arlene enjoyed visiting and helping others. One of her yearly traditions was spending hours writing personal notes in Christmas cards every holiday season to send to friends and family. She also spent a great deal of time keeping in contact with others over the phone.
Watching movies, either at home or at the movie theater and going out to eat were some of Arlene’s pastimes. In her later years, her favorite times were spent being “Gauggy”. This was the name given to her by her grandchildren, Reece and Jenessa. She loved spending time with them, attending their music performances, cheering them on at their sporting events and watching them grow!
Arlene was a member of the Women of the Moose and American Legion Auxiliary – Fishers.
Arlene is survived by her husband, Larry S. Benton; children, Pam (Jerry) Williams, Monica (Tim) Colvin; 3 stepchildren; 2 grandchildren, Reece and Jenessa Colvin; 13 step grandchildren; 9 step great-grandchildren; 1 step great-great grandchild; and her sister, Becky Gardner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Al Teter; sisters, Allene Williamson, Patty Gilbert, brother, Bob Secrist; and nephew, Chad Gilbert.
Visitation for Arlene will be from 5 pm – 8 pm on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel, 325 East Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN 46032. Additional visitation will be Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 10 am until 10:30 am, with a funeral service immediately following at 10:30 am. A funeral procession will occur to Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery – 9700 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46250, for a brief graveside service before burial.
Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the American Heart Association, National MS Society, or Alzheimer’s Association.
