Arilda Ethel Gilyeat died peacefully in her sleep on March 20, 2011.She was born in Rockport, Missouri on December 12, 1910 to Herbert Eli and Hattie Ellen Vest Robertson. Arilda graduated from business college in St. Joseph, MO; then worked in Kansas City, MO where she met and married Ernest F. Gilyeat, Jr.; moved to Indianapolis in 1936.
She was a stay-at-home mom for her 3 children and was an active and caring mom and great cook. She was a 60-year member of Tabernacle Presbyterian Church and its Young Settlers Class. She belonged to the So and Sew Club during WWII. She also belonged to the D.A.R., Riveria Club, Fallwood Bridge Club and to El-Jamalie. She retired from L.S.Ayres Furniture Dept. after 25 years. Arilda enjoyed playing bridge and once said she was on her third set of friends to play cards with. She loved traveling, needlework, gardening, visiting state parks and eating at restaurants at least 40 miles away from home.
Arilda was predeceased by her husband Ernest in 1974 and her sister, Thelma Nigh. She is survived by her daughter, Joan G. Moyer and sons, Richard (Barbara A.) and Robert (Barbara L.) Gilyeat, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Chapel (9700 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis) at 10 a.m. Monday, April 11. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to your favorite charity in Arilda’s name.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center – Broad Ripple.
