Antonio Recio “Tony” Recinto, a longtime Indianapolis-area psychiatrist, died peacefully January 6 in his Carmel home with loved ones by his side. He was 86.
Tony was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.
Born in Lucena, Philippines to Jose and Teresa Recinto, he graduated from Far Eastern University and FEU Medical School. He came to the United States in 1964 and worked at Trenton State Hospital in New Jersey. Tony then moved to Indianapolis to earn a specialty in child psychiatry from Indiana University Medical School. He moved to Carmel, Indiana in 1972. He worked as a psychiatrist at Riley Children’s Hospital, Tri-County Mental Health, and then entered private practice in Castleton for many years before retiring. He came out of retirement in his 70s to work at Anderson Health Center and then at Northeastern Health Center in Kendallville. He counseled thousands of patients – children and adults – in his more than five decades as a doctor.
His joyful and peaceful demeanor left an impression on those he met. He always reminded his children and patients to “live in the moment,” and that “anger is a waste of energy,” and “it’s not the years in your life, but the life in your years.”
Tony was a good, hardworking gentleman with a great sense of humor who always found a way to enjoy life.
Tony is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn and her daughter Isabelle. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years Rose Recinto, with whom he raised five children; Ron (Teresa), Christie Atofau (Joe); Bob (Rashmi); Vincent (Vonda) and Mike (Amy); grandchildren, Catherine Erath, Shivani, Krishan, AJ, Elena, Christopher, Cleo, Grace and Everett.
Also surviving are brothers Rodolfo (Myrna), Pete (Marilen) and Alberto. He is also preceded in death by his sister Linda Torralba.
Tony was a devout Catholic and highly respected psychiatrist. He founded the Barangay Club of Indianapolis and the American Council of International Physicians; and was a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Indiana Psychiatric Association. He enjoyed traveling with family, joining medical missions to the Philippines and staying in touch with longtime friends.
He will be missed for his positivity, kindness, and calm demeanor.
