Beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend
It is with profound sadness and love that we announce the passing of Anthony Joseph Bauer "AJ" Shaffer, who passed away at the age of 31, in Texas City, Texas, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Born in Bryan, Texas, AJ grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana. He lived a life full of passion, generosity, and devotion to those he loved. He was a man who made others feel welcome, whether in his home or at the table — a reflection of his deep love for food, family, and friendship.
AJ served as the Director of Food Services at Hamilton Trace Senior Living Facility, where he combined his culinary talent with compassion, ensuring residents felt dignity and care through the meals he helped create. His work was more than a job — it was a calling that brought him joy and purpose.
A devoted husband and father, AJ’s world revolved around his wife, Samantha Wells Shaffer, and their two beloved children, Alma June (7) and Oliver (4). He cherished family adventures, traveling, and visiting zoos across the country. A lifelong Indiana Pacers fan, AJ carried his enthusiasm for the game wherever he went.
He is survived by his wife and children; his mother, Teresa Bauer Shaffer; father, Douglas Shaffer (Debbie); brother, Jacob Shaffer; grandmother, Judy Shaffer; stepbrother, Evan Sellers; stepsister Grace Sellers; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Norma and Joe Bauer, and Dale Shaffer; and aunt, Ruthmarie Newport
A service to celebrate AJ’s life will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 3:30 PM at Prairie Waters at Hamilton Memorial Park 4180 Westfield Road, Westfield, Indiana. Visitation will precede the service from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in AJ's memory to Abundant Life Preschool Scholarship Program or the GoFundMe account for AJ's family to help with medical expenses.
Though AJ’s time on earth was brief, his impact was deep and lasting. He will be remembered for his laughter, warmth, loyalty, and the love he so freely gave.
